...Hemant Deval and his father, the chieftain of Khempur, live and work from their haveli, an immaculate country home set in rolling farmland an hour or so from Udaipur. Presiding with princely interest over all social comings and goings is the renowned Kathiawari stallion, Tipu Sultan: Hemants pride and joy and the jewel of his stable. I have enjoyed passionate talks with Hemant on the sand dunes of Pushkar, sipping sweat tea and praising the merits of exceptional horses; and I often rely on his expert and soulful judgement of potential purchase.
